Biographical Sketches of the Scientists

Stanley J. Dudrick, MD, FACS: Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Dudrick is widely recognized and respected throughout the scientific, academic and clinical world for his innovative and pioneering research in the development of the specialized central venous feeding technique known as intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH) or total parenteral nutrition (TPN).

The basic investigative development and subsequent successful clinical application of this highly effective therapeutic modality has been described as one of the four most significant accomplishments in the history of modern surgery, together with the discovery and development of asepsis and antisepsis, antibiotic therapy and anesthesia (JAMA 239:192, 1978). It has also been acknowledged as one of the three most important advancements in surgery during the past century along with open heart surgery and organ transplantation.

Born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, April 9, 1935, Dr. Dudrick received his B.S. in Biology with Honors in 1957 from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, graduating Cum Laude. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor fraternity and was awarded the Williamson Medal as the outstanding member of his graduating class.

His M.D. degree was conferred by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1961 followed by a rotating internship and residency training in General Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he served as Chief Resident in Surgery under Dr. Jonathan E. Rhoads until 1967.

After his training, he joined the faculty at Penn and ascended in rank from Instructor to Professor of Surgery at his alma mater within five years. In 1972, he was recruited to Houston as the first Professor and Founding Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the then new University of Texas Medical School at Houston and Chief of Surgical Services at Hermann Hospital/The University Hospital.

In 1988, he joined the staff of Pennsylvania Hospital, the nation’s first hospital, in Philadelphia as Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Surgeon to the Hospital, Director of the Residency Training Program in General Surgery and Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.

On May 1, 1990, he was appointed Surgeon-in-Chief of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease and Director of the Hermann Nutrition and Human Performance Center, the Nutritional Support Service, and the Nutritional Science Center at Hermann Hospital and Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

In November, 1994, he began serving as Associate Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of the Program in Surgery at Saint Mary’s Hospital, a Yale Affiliated Teaching Hospital, in Waterbury, Connecticut and as Professor of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine.

In October, 1995, he assumed the additional responsibilities at Saint Mary’s Hospital as Director of Graduate Medical Education. In October, 1996, he was appointed Adjunct Clinical Professor of Surgery on the faculty of Quinnipiac College.

Yale University granted him a Master of Arts Honoris Causa Degree in 1999. Between January, 2000 and September, 2002, he served also as Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of Surgical Education for the newly integrated Bridgeport Hospital/Yale New Haven Health System. He then returned to serve as Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Director of the Training Program in Surgery and Designated Institutional Official for Graduate Medical Education at Saint Mary’s Hospital/Yale Affiliate in Waterbury, Connecticut and Professor of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine for more than five years.

Dr. Dudrick assumed his current Chairman - Emeritus, Department of Surgery, status in October, 2007, while continuing as Director of the Training Program in Surgery until July, 2008, when he became Director - Emeritus of the Program in Surgery at Saint Mary’s Hospital. He currently continues to be active in both of these positions at Saint Mary’s Hospital and as Professor of Surgery at Yale.

A prolific medical writer, Dr. Dudrick was acknowledged by Current Contents, a publication of the Institute for Scientific Information, as the author or co-author of 2,535 scientific reference citations during a 13 year period, the most for any general surgeon in the literature. His more than 700 published works include a wide variety of topics on the care and management of surgical patients, especially those with complex nutritional, metabolic, critical care and re-operative problems.

Since 1974, he has served on more than fifteen Editorial Boards of scientific journals and professional publications including the prestigious Annals of Surgery. Of the several books he has produced, he is most proud of having served as a Co-Editor of the American College of Surgeons Manual of Surgical Nutrition, and as the Editor of the Manual of Preoperative and Postoperative Care, The Surgical Clinics of North America-Current Strategies in Surgical Nutrition, and The Biology and Practice of Current Nutritional Support.

Dr. Dudrick is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, was elected a Director of the American College of Surgeons South Texas Chapter and served as a Governor at Large of the American College of Surgeons from the State of Texas from 1979 - 1985. The Board of Regents selected him as the recipient of the prestigious American College of Surgeons Jacobsen Innovation Award in 2005.

In 2008, he received the Distinguished Service Award of the American College of Surgeons Connecticut Chapter. Certified by the American Board of Surgery, he served this prestigious organization as an Examiner continuously since 1974, as a member of its Board of Directors and then, as a Senior Member of the Board for a total of 26 years. The Certification Board of Nutritional Specialists has also honored him as a Certified Nutritional Specialist and as member of its Board; and he is a fellow of the American College of Nutrition and serves on its Twenty - First Century Board of Directors.

Among the more than 100 honors and awards which Dr. Dudrick has received are the AMA Joseph B. Goldberger Award in Clinical Nutrition; the AMA Brookdale Award in Medicine; the Seale Harris Medal of the Southern Medical Association; the Ladd Medal of the American Academy of Pediatrics; the American College of Nutrition Goldsmith Award; the Distinguished Alumnus Citation, the Alumni Medal, and The President’s Medal of Franklin and Marshall College; and the American Surgical Association’s First Flance/Karl Award in 1997 for his seminal and lifetime scientific contributions to surgery.

He holds membership in more than 100 academic, honorary, professional medical and scientific societies. He is a Founding Member of the Association for Academic Surgery, the Association of Veterans Administration Surgeons, the American Trauma Society, the International Society for Parenteral Nutrition and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. He is also a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Phi Beta Kappa Associates, and Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.

He has served as President of the International Society for Parenteral Nutrition, was the first President of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Chairman of the Surgery Section of the Southern Medical Association and President of the American Society of Nutritional Support Services. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees of Franklin and Marshall College since 1985 and served as Vice Chairman for eight years.

He also served as Chairman of the National Alumni Council of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and received the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center Alumni Service Award. He was voted the Distinguished Graduate Award by the Faculty of the School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania in 2007.

He is listed in Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in America, International Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the East, and Who’s Who in the World. He was also honored as the ASPEN Rhoads Lecturer for 2005. He has been elected to eighteen honorary memberships and fellowships, including Honorary Fellowship in the Philippine College of Surgeons; the American Pediatric Surgical Association; the American Academy of Pediatrics; the College of Medicine and Surgery of the Republic of Costa Rica; and the Societies for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition of Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Latin America, Japan, Poland and the Czech Republic.

He received the Association of Mexican Surgeons Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He was elected to Honorary Fellowships in the Polish Surgical Society in 2005 and to the Association of Columbian Surgeons in 2006. The National Academy of Medicine of Colombia elected him an Honorary Member in 2006; the Mexican Academy of Surgery elected him an Honorary Academic Member in 2008; and the Bohemian Medical Association of the Czech Republic granted him Honorary Membership in 2008.

In 1981, his former residents, fellows and associates formed the Stanley J. Dudrick Surgical Foundation and Society. In 1985, the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition established the Stanley J. Dudrick Research Scholar Award, a $5,000 annual award granted in his honor to young investigators in recognition of their past research accomplishments and future research potential.

In 2003, his former residents and fellows, colleagues, patients and friends established the Stanley J. Dudrick Research and Education Fund in the Department of Surgery at Saint Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury, Connecticut. He has received multiple teaching awards from his students and residents throughout his tenure at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, Saint Mary’s Hospital/Yale Affiliate, and the Yale University School of Medicine.

His investigative endeavors have recently been focused primarily on the nutritional and biochemical manipulations of amino acid, carbohydrate, fat and micronutrient metabolism and their interrelationships with nutritional status, optimal human cellular cognitive and physical performance; fitness; preventive medicine; generation and regression of atherosclerosis; and outcomes in critically ill patients. Dr. Dudrick and his wife Theresa reside in Naugatuck, Connecticut and Eaton Center, New Hampshire and are the proud parents of two sons and four daughters and the delighted grandparents of ten granddaughters and six grandsons.


William J. Kraemer PhD: Scientific Board Member

Dr. William J. Kraemer is currently a full professor in the Department of Kinesiology in the Neag School of Education working in the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT since 2001. He also holds an appointment as a full professor in the Department of Physiology and Neurobiology along with an appointment as a Professor of Medicine at the UCONN Health Center/School of Medicine.

At Penn State he had served from 1989-1998 as Director of the Laboratory for Sports Medicine and was Director of Research for the Center for Sports Medicine on the University Park campus; and held an appointment in the Department of Orthopedics in the College of Medicine at Penn State's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA. He also served as the Associate Director for the Center for Cell Research at Penn State and participated in a diverse cellular research program including work with two space shuttle projects for NASA. He held appointments in the Inter-college Program in Physiology, the Department of Kinesiology, and in the Gerontology Center.

He received his doctoral degree from the University of Wyoming in 1984 in the Department of Zoology and Physiology with his major fields of study being physiology and biochemistry with a minor in biostatistics. Dr. Kraemer is currently a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine and has served as a member of the ACSM's Board of Trustees and Administrative Council.  He is a past president of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Dr. Kraemer is also a member of the American Physiological Society and the Endocrine Society.

In addition, Dr. Kraemer serves on numerous scientific journal editorial boards, is the current Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, is an Associate Editor of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise and is on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Applied Physiology. Dr. Kraemer has also been a sport science liaison for the United States Olympic Committee to USA tennis, team handball, basketball, wrestling, and soccer.

He has authored or co-authored over 300 peer reviewed manuscripts in the scientific literature related to sports medicine, exercise and sports science. In addition, he has authored or co-authored 10 books in the areas of strength training and physiology of exercise. He was selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to edit the Medical Commission's book on "Strength Training for Athletes" which was published in 2002 and is currently the editor for the IOC's Encyclopedia of Sports Medicine's Endocrinology of Exercise and Sport published in 2005.   


Harry Preuss, M.D., M.A.C.N., C.N.S.: Scientific Board Member:

Dr. Preuss is Professor of Physiology, Medicine & Pathology, Georgetown University Medical Center; President, Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists (CNS); member, Board of Directors American Association for Health Freedom (AAHF); past president and ninth Master of the American College of Nutrition (ACN); former Established Investigator of the American Heart Association; and past member of three NIH councils.

He is also a member of the National Cholesterol Education Program; author of more than 600 medical publications, the nutrition section of the Encyclopedia Americana and eight books including "The Prostate Cure," "Maitake Magic" and the upcoming "Phytopharmaceuticals in Cancer Chemoprevention;" He received his Degree in Medicine from Cornell Medical College with special research and clinical training at Vanderbilt University, Georgetown University, and the NIH. He is the recipient of the James Lind Award for excellence in research on dietary supplements and the William B. Peck Award for excellence in research.

Sidney Stohs, Ph.D, FACN, CNS, ATSF, FASAHP: Scientific Board Member:

Dr. Sidney (Sid) J. Stohs is associated with Kitsto Consulting, which specializes in nutrition and wellness, toxicology, research design and organizational analysis.  He served as Sr. Vice President of Research and Development (retired) for AdvoCare International, Carrollton, TX, a nutrition and wellness company (2003-2008), and was responsible for the formulation of +25 commercial products and reformulation of  +35 products. He is also Dean Emeritus of the Creighton University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy and health Professions, Omaha, NE.

Dr. Stohs served as Dean at Creighton University for 13 years (1990-2003).  He also maintained a research laboratory in toxicology and nutrition funded through various federal and industrial contracts and foundation support.  Dr. Stohs received his B. S. Degree in Pharmacy and M. S. Degree in Pharmacognosy (Natural Medicinal Products) from the University of Nebraska and his Ph. D. Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin. He conducted post-doctoral studies and research in the Department of Forensic Medicine at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and the National Institute of Environmental Health, Research Triangle Park, NC, in pharmacology, toxicology and nutrition.

Dr. Stohs has published over 360 peer reviewed articles in scientific and professional journals, and has made over 500 presentations at international, national and regional scientific and professional meetings.  He has been the recipient of numerous grants and contracts for over 35 years to support his research studies.  He has received numerous honors and awards, and was the holder of the Gilbert F. Taffe Endowed Chair in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Creighton University. He has been elected into fellowship of the American College of Nutrition (FACN), the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATSF), and the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (FASAHP). 

He is also a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS), and is serving on his second three year term on the certification board for Nutrition Specialists.  He has served on a wide range of boards and committees for the National Institutes of Health, Environmental Protection Agency, and the U. S. Pharmacopeial Convention, as well as national, regional and international organizations in nutrition, toxicology, allied health and pharmacy. He serves on the Scientific and Medical Advisory Boards of a number of corporations and universities.

Ronnie Rosenthal, MD, FACS: Scientific Board Member:
 
Dr. Rosenthal is a General Surgeon with a special interest in the surgical care of the older patients. She is presently Chief of Surgery at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, a major teaching campus of the Yale University School of Medicine, and Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery.  

She has been involved with American College of Surgeons geriatric surgery programs since the early 1990's. She now chairs the ACS Geriatric Surgery Task Force and is the editor of the Geriatric Surgery Community on the ACS web-portal. She has also been active in the American Geriatric Society / John A. Hartford Foundation "Geriatrics for Specialists Project" since the first cohort was selected in 1995.

She is presently Director of the AGS/Hartford Geriatrics Education for Specialty Resident Grant Program, a 5 million dollar project to increase geriatrics educational programs for surgical trainees. She is also an Associate Editor of the AGS New Frontiers in Geriatric Research: An Agenda for Surgical and Related Medical Specialties. Dr. Rosenthal has authored many articles and chapters on geriatric surgery in major medical and surgical textbooks, and is the lead editor of the major textbook on this subject now in its second edition. She also is presently involved in several studies of surgical outcome in geriatric patients.

Rifat Latifi, MD, FACS : Member of the Scientific Board

Professor of Clinical Surgery, Section of Trauma and Critical Care, Vice Chairman, International Relations, Department of Surgery, University of Arizona, Director, Telemedicine Program, University Medical Center, Associate Director, Arizona Telemedicine Program, Telesurgery and International Affairs, Tucson, Arizona, USA. Dr. Latifi received his M.D. from University of Prishtina, Medical Faculty, Prishtina, the Republic of Kosova, in 1982.

He completed his residency training in Orthopedic and General Surgery at University of Prishtina, Kosova (1983 - 85), General Surgery Internship at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, under Michael J. Henderson (1993-1994) and General Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, New Haven, CT, under Ronald C. Merrell, MD (1994 - 99). He completed Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at New York Medical College/Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, Bronx, NY, under Rao Ivatury, MD (1996- 97).

He also completed research fellowships in General Surgery and Surgical Nutrition, under Stanley J. Dudrick, MD at Department of Surgery, University of Texas School of Medicine/Hermann Hospital, Houston, TX (1988) and Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, PA (1988 - 90). He is currently a Professor of Clinical Surgery, Section of Trauma and Critical Care, Vice Chairman, International Relations, Department of Surgery, and Associate Director of Trauma, Critical Care and Emergency Surgery, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona.

Eric Walsh, MD, MPH: Advisor on Clinical Applications, Future Chief Operating Officer.

Dr. Walsh was born in Hartford Connecticut, is a graduate of Oakwood College, the University of Miami School of Medicine, and Loma Linda University School of Public Health. He is the Chief Medical Officer for Orange County, California. He has been the Medical Director of the East Campus Urgent Care at Loma Linda University. Dr. Walsh served on the Advisory Board of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

He is a National Advisory Committee Member to the Center for Excellence for Sexual Health at the National Center for Primary Care, Morehouse School of Medicine, and an Executive Board Member of the National Physician Center for Family Resources in Birmingham, Alabama. Currently working in China with NGO's and government agencies on adolescent health initiatives and HIV prevention, he travels frequently as a speaker at local, regional and international health conferences in Haiti, Belize, Zambia, Jamaica, Spain and Mexico. In March of 2008 he was appointed to the U.S. Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA). Dr. Walsh resides in Yucaipa, California with his wife, Annette and his children, Jahan, Jasmine, and Eric.
